Cambridge is a town-sized city, easy to navigate on foot or bike – and students and tourists throng its streets.
Walking and cycling are the most popular modes of transport as much of the city is flat and easily accessible. Cambridge is 60 miles north of London, off the M11 motorway, or a 50-minute journey by train from London King’s Cross. Stansted Airport is 30 miles away.
Cambridge has a good array of pubs but few clubs. Cambridge Corn Exchange is the largest arts and entertainment venue with events from stand-up to dance, bands and more. The Arts Picturehouse shows foreign films and cult classics. There’s an IMAX screen at The Light Cinema; blockbusters can be seen here and also at Vue multiplex. Cambridge university offers nine specialist museums, including Kettles Yard Gallery, showcasing contemporary art, and the renowned Fitzwilliam Museum. The Strawberry Fair is held each June, and the Cambridge Folk Festival at the end of July. An excellent way to see the sights of Cambridge is to hire a punt, rowing boat or canoe and travel along the Backs at a leisurely pace or to go upriver to Grantchester.
We recommend that students shouldn’t work in paid employment during term time, as their studies will be intensive.
That said, some work may be possible within the Cambridge university and colleges, in bars or libraries, or as student helper at open days.
A team of experienced, impartial careers advisers at our careers service help students from arrival to beyond graduation. An annual careers guide helps students make the most of the service.
Our career support includes one-to-one consultations, a free book on drafting CVs and job applications, mock interviews, workshops on topics from cover letters to interviews, plus numerous briefings on employers and sectors.
Students can also learn from the experiences of others, whether it’s student feedback from interviews with employers or assessment centres, or the career insights of alumni.
With regular, major careers fairs (some subject-specific) and employer presentations, students get many opportunities to connect with companies. We also provide students with information to access graduate-level job vacancies.
Students are provided with opportunity to learn something new like a new language via our language centre. We offer students the chance to perfect team skills and develop resilience in our sports events. Drama and music can help students develop their presentation skills, or help run a society to demonstrate organisational skills.
A number of courses are provided including the chance to study abroad on exchange programmes, or go on field trips or study visits.
